Spectrophotometric determination of zinc in copper-base alloys with TAN

TAN reacts with zinc(II) forming a red complex with composition 1:2 Zn(II)-TAN and absorption maximum at 582 nm. Zinc can be determined with this reagent in the presence of Triton X-100, in the pH range 6.20-8.00 with a molar absorptivity of 4.5×10⁴ l/mol/cm Beer's Law was obeyed up to least 1.55 g/ml. Copper interference was eliminated with a mixture of thiosulfate and ascorbic acid and nickel separated by precipitation with dimethylglyoxime. The proposed method was used for zinc determination in several copper-base alloys and the results of analysis in comparison with certified values indicated that the procedure was accurate and precise. A derivative procedure is also proposed, allowing zinc determination with high sensitivity (5-400 ng/ml).     

The impact of polystyrene resins in solid-phase organic synthesis

Summary A major objective of the DIVERSOMER^® technology is to provide pure and characterized compounds for biological testing in order to prevent false negatives in our libraries. On several occasions, analysis of the final products by¹H-NMR and MS, has revealed by-products from the polystyrene solid support. Subsequently, three alternative methods were studied to remove polystyrene by-products; (i) prewashing of the resin prior to execution of the synthesis; (ii) pretreatment of the resin with the cleavage conditions consistent with the solid-phase synthesis reaction scheme; and (iii) parallel purification.     

Reactions of ketenes. XX. Phenylketene dimethylacetal as synthon for the introduction of functionalized phenylethyl units

Phenylketene dimethylacetal ( 1 ) reacts with the α-diazoketones to give the dihydrofurans 6 . These compounds, as cyclic ortho esters, can undergo dealcoholation into the furans 2 and hydrolysis into the γ-ketoesters 3 and into the γ-ketoacids 4 . Cyclopropane acetal 8 , obtained starting from acetal 1 and ethyl diazoacetate, by heating leads quantitatively to functionalized ester 9 . These synthetic methods enlarge the sphere of applicability of the electron-rich alkene 1 as synthon in organic synthesis.     

Imino acids and collagen triple helix stability: characterization of collagen-like polypeptides containing Hyp-Hyp-Gly sequence repeats

The analysis of factors contributing to the stability of proteins is a subject of intense debate. Particularly challenging is the study of structural proteins, since their function is their structure. Among these is collagen, the key structural component of bones, skin, cartilage, tendons, and other connecting tissues. It is well established that the collagen triple helix is characterized by the presence of hydroxyproline, whose content modulates triple helix thermal stability according to the requirement of the host organism. Because of the complexity and the fibrous nature of collagen, data on the stability and structure of this protein have been mainly obtained by the use of collagen-like polypeptides. On the basis of CD characterization of collagen-like polypeptides we here show that the presence of Hyp at the X position of repeating triplets Hyp-Hyp-Gly stabilizes the triple helix significantly. This extra-stabilization has been ascribed, by using molecular modeling, to the formation of a hydrogen bond between Hyp residues belonging to the X and the Y positions of adjacent chains. This communication also provides a comprehensive interpretation of the ensemble of available data on polypeptides containing proline derivatives.     

Cellulose microfibrils from banana farming residues: isolation and characterization

Cellulose microfibrils have been prepared from banana rachis using a combination of chemical and mechanical treatments. The morphology and structure of the samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to characterize the chemical modifications of the samples after each treatment. Suspensions of bundled or individualized 5-nm-wide microfibrils were obtained after homogenization (PH) whereas an organosolv (PO) treatment resulted in shorter aggregates of parallel cellulose microcrystallites. The sharper rings in the X-ray diffraction pattern of the PO-treated sample suggest a higher crystallinity due to a more efficient removal of hemicelluloses and dissolution of amorphous zones by the acid treatment. Both microfibrils and microcrystals prepared by both methods can be used as reinforcing filler in nanocomposite materials.     

Quantitation of diethylene glycol monoethyl ether in citrus oils

The use of diethylene glycol monoethyl ether as a flavor solvent is restricted. Since existing methods of quantitation are tedious or require sophisticated multi-dimensional GC instrumentation, a simple method has been developed using low cost GC-MS. Monitoring of ions 31 and 45 enables quantitation of DEGEE in essential oils at levels down to 1 μg/g with accuracy equal to or better than 15%.     

On the origin of quasi-racemic aplysinopsin cycloadducts, (bis)indole alkaloids isolated from scleractinian corals of the family Dendrophylliidae. Involvement of enantiodefective Diels-Alderases or asymmetric induction in artifact processes involving adventitious catalysts?

Reported here are two novel quasi-racemic (bis)indole alkaloids, cycloaplysinopsin A (5) and cycloaplysinopsin B (6), isolated from tropical Indo-Pacific (Comoros, Philippines) scleractinian corals of the family Dendrophylliidae. Although their structures suggest a Diels-Alder cycloaddition origin from aplysinopsin-type precursors, neither experiments, nor theory allowed us to clearly distinguish an enzymatic process with scarce enantioselection from the intrusion of an adventitious catalyst in the coral extracts, where the chiral environment caused a slight asymmetric induction.     

From Epiraikovenal,an Instrumental Niche-Exploitation Sesquiterpenoid of Some Strains of the Marine Ciliated Protist euplotes raikovi,to an unusual intramolecular tele-dienone-olefin [2+2] photocycloaddition

It is shown that strains of the marine ciliate Euplotes raikovi are subtly variable in their production of secondary metabolites. Strains GA8 and 39W from Mediterranean and SB8 from Californian coasts produce the sesquiterpenoid epiraikovenal ( 3 ), while strains GA8 and SB8 also produce secoepiraikovenal ( 4 ), which play an instrumental niche-exploitation role and have also taxonomic significance. Comparison of 3 and 4 with raikovenal ( 2 ) and its putative biogenetic precursor 1 , which have similar roles in the conspecific strain Morl from Casablanca coast in the Atlantic Ocean, inspired us the first case of intramolecular tele-dienone-olefin [2+2] photocycloaddition, exemplified here by the transformation of 1 into ent- 3 . This served also to unequivocally clarify the stereochemical relationship between 3 and 2 .
